Little Women: The Musical

Based on Louisa May Alcott's 1868–69 semi-autobiographical two-volume novel, it focuses on the four March sisters— traditional, Meg, wild, aspiring writer Jo, timid Beth and romantic Amy,— and their beloved Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts, while their father is away serving as a Union Army chaplain during the Civil War. Intercut with the vignettes in which their lives unfold are several recreations of the melodramatic short stories Jo writes in her attic studio.

Cast are Iowa Conservatory students, and students in the community ages 8th-12th grade.

Abigail steered away from historically accurate colors to give each March sister a vibrant, distinctive color palette. Each sister represents a season that her colors are pulled from and that aligns with her personality: Meg: Spring; Jo: Fall; Beth: Winter; and Amy: Summer. A variety of square and floral patterns are used throughout the production to mimic the season and reflect the shapes and images in the paper wall set, which the sisters interact with during the performance.

Amy’s Wedding Dress

Designed and built by Abigail and embellished by herself and her eight students in her costume design class. All students worked on a variety of costumes in the musical to learn about costumes design, but every single student worked on a piece of this wedding dress, and Jo’s patchwork skirt she wears at the top of the show.
